Health conditions of pets

Important notice

We will take every precaution to ensure that your precious pet spends good time in an aircraft. However, the transportation environment, which is very different from everyday life, can have various effects on your pet's health and may cause collapse, injury, or death. Therefore, we recommend that you consult with your veterinarian in advance.
We shall not be liable for any injury or death of a pet during transportation if the cause is the pet's own health condition, constitution (including the effects of atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, and noise), characteristics, or inadequate packaging.
We cannot accept pets in the following health conditions:

  • Not in the health conditions that are appropriate for boarding an aircraft
  • Being pregnant
  • Being young (less than 4-month old)
  • Using sedative
  • Having heart disease or respiratory disease

Pets in the following conditions are at high risk of health problems:

  • Having no appetite or energy
  • Breathing is heavy and heart rate is elevated
  • Walking unsteadily
  • Being excessively nervous and trembling
  • Being excessively nervous and drooling heavily
  • Being panicked and keeping barking

Number of pets

  • In principle, put one dog or cat per pet cage.
    • We do not accept storing multiple animals in a cage for transportation due to the risk of injury caused by attacks between pets.
  • Regarding small birds, 2 of the same species may be put in a cage (within the capacity of an M-size pet cage).

Cage

Conditions of pet cage

If you use your own cage, we will only accept those that comply with IATA regulations and are suitable for air transportation.

  • All conditions must be met.
  • The cage has a firm roof.
  • The cage is durable (made of hard plastic, metal, wood, etc.)
  • The cage is well ventilated with windows for ventilation.
  • The cage has functional handles on the outside.
  • The case has a lock to prevent escape or contact.
  • Wheels are removable or fixable.
  • The case is spacious enough for pets to stand up, sit down, sleep, and turn around.
  • There is a water-absorbent mat in the cage and waterproof equipment to prevent liquids and waste from leaking outside.
  • Cooling mats, appropriate containers and dishes for drinking water and feeding are prepared according to the condition of the pet and the duration of transportation (feeding at transfer points is not permitted).

Rental pet cage

Rental pet cage size Dimensions
(width x depth x height)
S 40cm×55cm×40cm
M 46cm×66cm×50cm
L 55cm×80cm×60cm
LL 65cm×95cm×70cm
  • Number of the cages we have is limited. In particular, if you would like to rent an "LL" size cage, contact the Reservation and Information Center in advance.
    Environment inside the pet cage:
<Limited during summer season (from May 1 to October 31 every year)>

Ventilation inside pet cages will be poor and it is dangerous for the animals, and therefore we do not accept live animals kept within a cage placed inside one of our prescribed cages or in a covered pet cage.
  • If you would like to check in your pet, refer to the cage size described in the table.
  • The size of the cargo compartment is limited, and depending on the amount of baggage, etc. that are loaded, we may not be able to accept pets. In such a case, we may ask you to change the flight. We appreciate your understanding.
  • Large dogs, etc., depending on the size of the pet cage, may not be transported on the aircraft. Please note that the maximum size that can be loaded into the cargo compartment is approximately 85 cm in height and 121 cm in width.

Cages fitted with a power generator or pump:

For safety reasons, you are not allowed to check in those cages. Please bring it with you on board. You cannot operate the power generation or pump on board.

Environment for checked pets

  • After your pet is checked in at the airport counter, it is held in an air-conditioned environment until just before departure. After that, the staff will take your pet onto the aircraft.
  • Your pet will be loaded into the cargo hold of the aircraft. The cargo compartment is temperature- and humidity-controlled by an air conditioning system. However, due to factors such as outside air temperature, the environment may differ from that of the passenger cabin. In particular, during the summer, high temperatures due to the effects of ambient temperature and reflected heat may also have an impact. And, since operations to load pets onto aircraft take place outdoors, there may be significant changes in temperature and humidity during summer and winter.
  • During the flight, the lights in the cargo compartment are turned off, creating a dark room.
  • During takeoff, landing, and flight, aircraft engine noise, mechanical operation noise, wind noise, etc. will be heard. And, during loading and unloading, engine noise, ground vehicle noise, etc. will be heard.
  • At the arrival airport, a staff member will carry your pet and return it to you in person. If you have checked in a pet, contact a member of staff in the arrival lobby upon arrival.
  • After arrival, pets may get sick due to change in environment. If possible, please let them rest after arrival.
If your pet exhibits any of the following symptoms, we recommend that you consult with a veterinarian for a diagnosis:
    • Diarrhea
    • Vomiting
    • Heavy breathing
    • Trembling
    • Having no appetite
    • Not wanting to walk or go outside
    • Continued anxiety
    • Something seems different

Things to be checked and prepared in advance by customers

Before departure

  • Pets that are not accustomed to spending long periods of time in a pet cage are prone to feel stress. Therefore, we recommend getting them used to it before traveling.
  • Please consult with your veterinarian and have your pet vaccinated with the appropriate vaccines.
  • In the case of dogs, Please receive the vaccination prescribed by the Rabies Prevention Law within an year.

Feeding

  • Once pets are checked in, they will not be fed including during the waiting time for connecting flights. Please make sure your pet has eaten beforehand.
  • Being too full or too hungry can cause motion sickness and other physical discomfort. When you feed them or have them drink water, make sure to give them appropriate amount.

Installation of water dispenser (nozzle type)

It is necessary to install a water dispenser (nozzle type) to prevent heatstroke and dehydration in pets, as well as to calm them down when they are overexcited.

  • The lid of the water dispenses should be tightly closed to prevent water leakage. Also, make sure to secure the dispenser to the cage.
  • Only nozzle-type water dispensers are acceptable. Water dispensers with drip trays cannot be accepted, as there is a risk of water spillage.

Measures against heat and cold

  • We ask for your cooperation in taking measures against heat and cold. For example, please provide cooling items such as cooling mats and ice packs in the summer, and blankets and pet heat pads in the winter.
  • Dogs and cats kept indoors often have a thick undercoat, so we recommend grooming the undercoat before traveling during the summer season.

Accidental ingestion

  • Please note that, when boarding an aircraft, placing toys and other items inside the pet cage may cause the pet to accidentally swallow them due to changes in the environment.
  • Collars and leashes, like toys, may be chewed through or become entangled around the body of the pet.
Leash: Due to the above risks, please be sure to remove it before checking the pet in.
Collar: If you would like your pet to wear the collar during transportation, make sure that the collar is not loose-fitted and appropriately put beforehand.
